- Description of event
Yeshi Topden, a 24-year-old monk from Meldro Gongkar, joined Gaden Monastery in 1986. On 5 March 1988, he intended to participate in a demonstration during the Lhasa Monlam Chenmo but was arrested before the protest began. He was detained at Gutsa Prison for five months. Following his release, he was sent back to the monastery.
He again participated in protests on 5, 6, and 7 March 1989, after which he was detained for two months. In 1990, officials from the Government Work Department raided Gaden Monastery and began enforcing restrictive political policies. As a result, 40 monks were expelled and permanently barred from re-entering the monastery. Many monks, including Yeshi Topden, were placed under surveillance and subjected to sudden restrictions, including prohibitions on leading gatherings of more than ten people, leaving town for more than one week, and entering temples or monasteries.
These measures compelled him to leave Tibet in July 1990, and he arrived in Dharamsala, India, in October 1990.

Yeshi Togden (born c. 1965) was a monk of Gaden Monastery in Meldro Gyama, Lhasa. He was arrested twice for participating in peaceful demonstrations in Lhasa—first on 5 March 1988 during the Great Prayer Festival, and again on 9 March 1989. On both occasions, he was detained without trial in Gutsa, Outridu, and Sitru prisons, where he endured overcrowded conditions, inadequate food, restrictions on religious practice, and frequent beatings. He also took part in prison protests over food despite the risk of punishment.
Yeshi Togden was released in 1988 following the visit of a U.S. delegation and again in 1989 after several months in detention. Under Chinese “cleansing” policies, he was permanently barred from rejoining any monastery. As a result, he left Tibet in 1990.

Yeshi Samten (lay name Bagdo) was a 19-year-old monk at Gaden Monastery, originally from a nomadic family in Meldro Gongkar. On 5 March 1988, he participated in a protest during the Lhasa Monlam Chenmo. As authorities began arresting demonstrators, he fled to his hometown. Shortly thereafter, five police officers came to his home and arrested him.
He was subsequently convicted and sentenced to six months’ imprisonment at Trowu Prison. After returning to Gaden Monastery, he observed that the Government Work Department had infiltrated the monastery’s administration and begun intimidating monks. New political programs were introduced, and 40 monks were expelled from the monastery. He later escaped to India in April 1991.

- Description of event
Yeshi Rabgyal (born 1968) was a monk at Gaden Monastery in Meldrogunkar County, Lhasa City. In May 1996, during a “re-education” session at the monastery, a Chinese work team imposed a total ban on pictures of the Dalai Lama. Leading a large group of monks, Yeshi confronted the officials and refused to surrender the images. That evening, security forces returned with reinforcements, resulting in a violent clash in which two monks were killed.
The following day, Yeshi Rabgyal was identified and arrested along with monk Jampa Lodroe. He was severely beaten during detention at Gutsa. In the months that followed, a total of 62 monks and one layperson were arrested, with 17—including Yeshi Rabgyal—receiving sentences of five years or more.
In August 1996, the Lhasa Intermediate People’s Court sentenced Yeshi Rabgyal and Jampa Lodroe to 15 years’ imprisonment. Yeshi was initially held in Drapchi Prison, then transferred to Trisam “re-education through labour” Prison, before continuing his term in Drapchi. Other prisoners from this crackdown included Jampa Lodroe (Lobsang Tenpa), Atsak, Jampa Tenkyong, Pasang Tsogye, Tenzin Gelek, Yonten Gyalpo, Lobsang Wangchuk, Sonam Tsering, Lobsang Dawa, Kunchok Dhondup, Phuntsok Dhondup, Tasang Norbu, Jampa Thaye, Dueshe Lobsang Dawa, and Lobsang Tenzin.

- Description of event
Yeshi Ngawang (born 1968), from Chideshol Kyimshe in Gongkar County, was a monk at Sungrabling Monastery. On 10 March 1989, he and five other monks posted notices commemorating the 1959 Tibetan Uprising, calling for Tibetan independence and the return of the Dalai Lama. He was arrested on 20 April 1989 following a police raid and, in August 1989, was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment and three years’ deprivation of political rights. He was later transferred to Drapchi Prison.
In December 1990, after the death in custody of fellow prisoner Lhakpa Tsering, Yeshi Ngawang took part in prison protests. In April 1991, he was beaten and held in solitary confinement for one month for leading another protest. In April 1993, he was caught passing his family a written account of political prisoners and prison conditions. Accused of “leaking state secrets,” he received an additional nine-year sentence, bringing his total term to 14 years. His health reportedly deteriorated severely in prison, and his release was expected in 2003.
