Yeshe Sangpo, 58, is a native of Bum-nying village in Dzachuka, Sershul (Ch: Shiqu) County, Kardze (Ch: Ganzi) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, where he lives with his wife, Tsering Dolma.
In 2007, Yeshe Sangpo and his brother, Lobsang, led a local protest in Sershul (Ch: Shiqu) County to demand the protection of the Tibetan language against restrictive policies. As primary organizers of the movement, they were met with excessive police force, which resulted in a violent confrontation between the public and authorities.
In the aftermath, Yeshe Sangpo was accused of causing the death of a police officer and was detained for several months. In May 2008, he was sentenced to 18 years in prison.
