The Tibetan Political Prisoner Database (TPPD) was launched on 10 December 2021 to highlight the situation of political detainees tortured and imprisoned for exercising human rights by the Chinese authorities in Tibet. The database contains verified and updated information on Tibetan political prisoners since 1958 and aims to maintain and create a secure long-term digital archive.
Data is collected through primary sources, including direct information from TCHRD’s team of field officers, and secondary sources from credible exile Tibetan media houses and international human rights organisations. Each political prisoner is documented using a standardized template including their biographical and detention-related information. The database also incorporates relevant reports released by TCHRD and is regularly updated to ensure consistent recording, facilitating efficient searches and retrieval of specific records.
The TPPD seeks to challenge the official narratives propagated by the Chinese government by systematically monitoring and documenting human rights violations perpetrated in Tibet. The database serves as an invaluable resource for human rights advocates, researchers, policymakers, and media professionals. By providing verified and up-to-date information, the database supports informed advocacy efforts, enhances awareness, and promotes accountability regarding the plight of Tibetan political prisoners. The database is built with Uwazi, an open-source web-based application developed by HURIDOCS.
