- Description of event
Yeshi Damdul, born in 1968, was among the six monks involved in the March 1989 poster campaign commemorating the Tibetan National Uprising Day. A monk of Sungrabling Monastery, he participated in drafting and distributing pro-independence slogans advocating Tibetan freedom and loyalty to the Dalai Lama.
After authorities identified the monks, Yeshi Damdul was arrested and formally charged with “counter-revolutionary propaganda.” During the October 1989 trial conducted by the Lhoka Intermediate People’s Court, he was accused of undermining state authority through political activism. He was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment and three years’ deprivation of political rights.
He was subsequently transferred to Drapchi Prison together with the other monks, where political detainees were subjected to harsh treatment and close surveillance.
