- Description of event
Yeshi Tsering, born in 1969, participated in the March 1989 peaceful poster campaign organised by monks from Sungrabling Monastery. Together with fellow monks, he distributed posters and painted slogans calling for Tibetan independence and the return of fundamental freedoms.
He was arrested on 20 April 1989 after police raids on the monastery uncovered materials linked to the campaign. During detention, he was interrogated numerous times before being formally charged with “counter-revolutionary propaganda.”
In October 1989, the court sentenced him to four years’ imprisonment and one year’ deprivation of political rights. He was later transferred to Drapchi Prison, where he remained incarcerated alongside other Tibetan political prisoners.
