- Description of event
Tenzin Samphel, born in 1958 in Kongpo Lushar, Tibet, was a Tibetan monk and former English language teacher who became a political prisoner following his involvement in peaceful pro-independence activities. He spent his childhood in the Tibetan settlement in Mysore, South India, where he received his education after his family went into exile. In 1984, he returned to Tibet to visit relatives and later worked as an English language teacher in Kongpo. In 1988, he joined Samye Monastery, located southeast of Lhasa, and became a monk.
In 1991, Tenzin Samphel was arrested by Chinese authorities in Lhokha for allegedly raising political slogans and putting up wall posters calling for Tibetan independence. The authorities accused him of engaging in “separatist activities,” a charge frequently used against Tibetans advocating for political and cultural rights. Although the exact date of his arrest remains unavailable, reports indicate that he was detained during a broader crackdown on Tibetan nationalist expression and peaceful political dissent.
Following his arrest, Tenzin Samphel was tried and sentenced by the Lhasa Intermediate People’s Court. He received a three-year sentence of “reform through labour,” a punitive system involving forced labour, political indoctrination, and harsh detention conditions. He was subsequently imprisoned in the Toelung Reform Through Labour Camp near Lhasa, where political detainees were reportedly subjected to strict surveillance, coercive re-education, and difficult living conditions.
