- Description of event
Lobsang Jampa, lay name Tsering Phuntsok, was a 36-year-old monk from Gaden Monastery. He was detained on 20 March 1992 for taking part in a pro-independence demonstration in Lhasa that involved approximately 250 peaceful protesters carrying Tibetan national flags and chanting anti-Chinese slogans. During the demonstration, both plainclothes and uniformed Chinese police intervened, beating and arresting the demonstrators.
Lobsang Jampa was subsequently sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment. Following the Drapchi Prison protests in May 1998, his sentence was extended by an additional 18 months, bringing the total term to nine and a half years. He has been held in Drapchi Prison, where reports have consistently described harsh conditions of detention and the mistreatment of political prisoners.
