- Description of event
Dorjee, a 30-year-old Tibetan from Gorma Municipality in Nagchu, was arrested in January 2002 during a government-organized “patriotic re-education” session in his hometown. In a moment of spontaneous defiance, he stood up before officials and openly challenged the state narrative by declaring, “I want Free Tibet.” This peaceful expression of political belief was met with an immediate and violent response.
Armed Chinese security personnel arrested Dorjee on the spot, forcibly dragged him away, and subjected him to severe beatings. He was taken to a local detention centre, where he endured days of intense interrogation and torture. The abuse was so severe that he required hospitalization for one month and fifteen days to recover from his injuries.
Even after his release, the persecution did not end. Dorjee was later re-arrested, detained for an additional fifteen days, and subsequently placed under strict surveillance. His movements and daily activities were closely restricted, leaving him under constant control and intimidation. Dorjee’s case illustrates the harsh reprisals faced by Tibetans who peacefully assert their political views and the long-term consequences of state repression beyond detention.
