- Description of event
Lobsang Legden (b. 1966) was a monk from Sera Monastery and one of the leaders of a peaceful demonstration held on 1 October 1987 in Lhasa, marking the anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The protest, involving monks and laypeople, included calls for Tibetan freedom and prayers for the Dalai Lama.
After approximately 50 demonstrators were arrested near Barkhor Police Station, they were taken inside the station compound. When the detained protesters continued shouting slogans, Chinese police opened fire. Lobsang Legden was shot in the head at close range and killed instantly inside the police station.
Following his death, his body was taken to a hospital morgue, and his family was required to pay a fee to retrieve it. He was later cremated at Paphonka crematorium near Lhasa.
