- Description of event
Gonpo Sonam, a distinguished scholar of Tibetan language and culture from Gyaltsé Rabgang in Shigatse, endured repeated arrests due to his unwavering dedication to preserving Tibetan identity.
First Arrest (1959): Following his enlistment in the Tibetan army to resist the Chinese occupation, Gonpo was detained under the “Review Campaign” and imprisoned for two years.
Second Arrest (1966): Amid the Cultural Revolution, he was apprehended once more and sentenced to ten years of imprisonment, during which he labored in the “Reform-Through-Labour Unit” at Sangyip Prison in Lhasa. He remained confined until 1977.
Third Arrest (1983): Gonpo, along with several others, was arrested during a Chinese political campaign known as “Punishment for the Guilty,” though the specific charges were vague. Initially held at Lhasa’s Tasun Khang Prison, he was subsequently transferred to Drapchi Prison Unit 1.
The cumulative stress of incarceration took a severe toll on his health, culminating in the onset of epilepsy in 1985. Following the recognition of his deteriorating condition, he was released on medical parole. Despite this, his health continued to decline, and he passed away on 23 December 1987, at the age of 61.
Throughout his imprisonment, Gonpo remained steadfast in his commitment to Tibetan heritage, imparting knowledge of language and culture to younger inmates, and earning lasting admiration for his resilience and dedication.
