Lhakpa was initially held at a Public Security Bureau (PSB) Detention Centre before being transferred to Drapchi Prison. During his detention, he was subjected to violent interrogations, prolonged solitary confinement, and harsh punishment. He was repeatedly penalized for refusing to comply with degrading prison rules, including walking with his head bowed and singing Chinese patriotic songs.
