Description of event

Gonpo Gyaltsen, born in 1973, is a native of Drayab County in Chamdo Prefecture. At the time of his arrest in April 1997, he was 24 years old and a monk of Dragyab Bhugon Monastery.

He was detained by the authorities on charges of pasting pro-Tibetan independence leaflets. Following legal proceedings, he was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment and incarcerated in Drapchi Prison.
