- Description of event
Lobsang Ludrup, born in 1970 in Phangmoe Yudrang, Meldro Gongkar, was ordained in 1985 and became a monk at Jokhang Temple in Lhasa. Although he did not directly participate in the protests of 1987 and 1988, he witnessed the events and assisted foreign visitors in documenting the demonstrations. On 5 March 1989, he took part in a demonstration in Lhasa.
Following the protest, approximately 200 armed police officers and 50 officials from the Public Security Bureau (PSB) raided Jokhang Temple and arrested several monks, including Lobsang Ludrup, Ngawang Sodhar (Phenpo), Penpa (Tsang), Rigzin (Taktse), Wangdue (Taktse), Jigme Wangchen (Taktse), Ngawang Gelek (Kham Tsawa), and Sonam Wangdue (Lhoka). They were detained at Sangyip Detention Centre, where Lobsang Ludrup was interrogated and tortured, including with electric batons.
He was sentenced to one year of “re-education through labour” and later transferred to Sitru Prison. His cellmates included Jamyang (Drepung Monastery), Ngawang Gyaltsen (Toelung), and Kalsang (Meldro Gongkar). After his release, he was expelled from Jokhang Temple due to Chinese political control over the monastery administration.
