- Description of event
Lobsang Nyima was a Tibetan monk from Pomda Monastery in Pashoe County, Chamdo Prefecture. In August 1997, he was arrested after resisting Chinese officials during a “work team” visit to his monastery, during which he refused to read aloud a document denouncing His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
During interrogation, Lobsang Nyima openly expressed his pro-independence views. He was subsequently beaten, gagged, and detained at the Pashoe County Public Security Bureau (PSB) Detention Centre. After approximately one month, he was transferred to the Chamdo Detention Centre.
He was later sentenced to five years’ imprisonment by the Chamdo Intermediate People’s Court. He is currently serving his sentence at Drapchi Prison, where concerns remain regarding his treatment and conditions of detention.
