- Description of event
On 29 March 1994, Lobsang Palden and four other monks from Serwa Monastery staged a peaceful protest against Chinese rule. During the protest, they removed government nameplates and displayed posters calling for Tibetan independence and long life for His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
The monks compelled a local official to escort them to the County headquarters, where they continued their demonstration by shouting slogans and posting additional protest materials. All five monks were subsequently arrested, subjected to public punishment, and later prosecuted.
Following trial, Jampa Tashi and Lobsang Palden were each sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment, while Chime Dorjee, Lobsang Jinpa, and Lobsang Tsegyal received sentences of 15 years’ imprisonment.
Chime Dorjee is currently serving his sentence at Drapchi Prison, while Jampa Tashi, Lobsang Palden, Lobsang Jinpa, and Lobsang Tsegyal are reportedly incarcerated at Powo Tramo Prison.
