- Description of event
D.N., a 25-year-old man from Lhasa, fled to Dharamsala in December 1993 after escaping from Tibet. Before his arrest, he worked as a driver at the Tingkyechu Office in Lhasa. In March 1989, he joined demonstrations around the Barkhor area, where police opened fire on protestors. During the incident, a Tibetan demonstrator was shot dead and D.N. himself was shot in the right hip and left shin. He was hospitalized for 49 days due to his injuries.
About a month later, he was arrested and taken to Gutsa Prison, where he was interrogated and severely tortured, including beatings and electric shocks. After three months, he was brought before the Lhasa Intermediate People’s Court and sentenced in 1989 to ten years’ imprisonment for participating in the demonstrations. He was later transferred to Drapchi Prison.
His health deteriorated due to epileptic attacks, and he was moved to Mimang Menkhang hospital under guard. Due to his poor condition, he was allowed to stay at his parents’ home under police monitoring. When authorities attempted to return him to prison, his parents arranged his escape, and he safely reached Dharamsala in 1993.
