Lhakpa Dhondup has a long and persistent history of involvement in political protest. At the age of thirteen, he was first arrested during the 1987 demonstrations in Lhasa and was subsequently expelled from school for his participation. In September 1990, while detained in the adult section of Gutsa Prison, he openly shouted slogans calling for Tibetan independence. As a result, he was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment.
- Details of Violations Faced in Detention
After his release in 1993, Lhakpa Dhondup continued to engage in protest activities. He was again detained for several days, during which he was reportedly subjected to severe beatings. Shortly after his release, fearing imminent rearrest and further persecution, he fled Tibet. In January 1994, he successfully reached Dharamsala, India, where he sought refuge.
