- Description of event
Tamdin Sithar, a 46-year-old Tibetan, was re-arrested on 26 August 1983 after authorities allegedly found him in possession of a statement by the Dalai Lama commemorating the 24th anniversary of the 1959 Tibetan Uprising. He was reportedly tried by the Lhasa Intermediate People's Court in 1984 and sentenced to 12 years' imprisonment. Although the exact charges remain unknown, they reportedly included allegations of counter-revolutionary activities or espionage. He was detained in Drapchi Prison, Lhasa, and was adopted by Amnesty International as a prisoner of conscience.
Tamdin had previously been detained without trial from 1971 to 1975 for his alleged involvement in a pro-independence youth group. Following his release, he was placed under supervision in a labour brigade near Lhasa before being re-arrested in 1983.
