- Description of event
The Dasher Farmers’ Group—Lhundrup Dorjee, Sonam Dorjee, Sonam Rinchen, Thupten Yeshi, and Kunchok Lodroe—were farmers from Dasher Village in Meldrogungkar County. On 30 June 1992, they carried out a rare act of collective protest by marching toward Lhasa, shouting pro-independence slogans and raising the banned Tibetan national flag. They were swiftly arrested by Chinese Public Security Bureau officials, during which Lhundrup Dorjee suffered serious head and facial injuries due to police violence.
Thupten Yeshi was identified as the leader and sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment, while Lhundrup Dorjee received the same sentence plus five years’ deprivation of political rights. The remaining three—Sonam Dorjee, Sonam Rinchen, and Kunchok Lodroe—were each sentenced to 13 years, along with four years’ deprivation of political rights. Sonam Rinchen died in Drapchi Prison in 2000 after being denied medical treatment, becoming a documented case of death in custody.
