- Description of event
Gyaltsen Choedon is a Tibetan nun who took part in the mass demonstrations that occurred in March 1988 in Tibet. Following her participation in the protest, she was arrested in April 1988 by Chinese authorities and detained for four months. During her detention, she was subjected to repeated interrogation and torture. Throughout this period, she was also denied adequate medical treatment despite the deteriorating condition of her health, which had long-term consequences.
After completing her detention, Gyaltsen Choedon was released. Due to continued fear of persecution and restrictions imposed on former political detainees, she later fled Tibet and successfully escaped to India in November 1989.
