- Description of event
Jampel Gedun, born in 1960, was a monk of Gaden Monastery at the time of his arrest on 20 March 1992. He was detained along with thirteen other monks following a peaceful demonstration near the Tsuklhakhang (Jokhang) Temple in Lhasa. The protest, which involved approximately 250 Tibetans, featured the display of Tibetan national flags and the chanting of slogans calling for independence and denouncing Chinese rule. The demonstration was violently suppressed by Chinese security forces, including both plain clothes and uniformed police, who beat and arrested participants.
Following his detention, Jampel Gedun was sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment and incarcerated in Drapchi Prison, an institution widely known for its harsh conditions and the systematic torture of political prisoners.
