- Description of event
Jampal Jangchub, a 31-year-old native of Toelug Dechen County, began his formal education at the age of eight before later entering monastic life. As a monk, he became actively involved in political demonstrations advocating for Tibetan rights. On 27 September 1987, he participated in a protest and was subsequently arrested and detained at Gutsa Prison, where he endured four months of incarceration.
Following his release, Jampal Jangchub returned to his monastery; however, his commitment to the cause remained unwavering. On 10 March 1989, he once again took part in a protest, leading to his re-arrest. Owing to his prior involvement in political demonstrations, he was subjected to a particularly severe sentence. He was convicted and sentenced to 19 years of imprisonment in Sangyip prison, along with an additional five years’ deprivation of political rights, reflecting the authorities’ punitive stance toward repeat political offenders.
