Atsak, also known as Dawa Dhondup, was among the monks arrested at Gaden Monastery on 7 May 1996 following protests against a Chinese ban on photographs of the Dalai Lama. After monks appealed peacefully for the ban to be lifted, armed police returned with reinforcement, leading to violent clashes, injuries, and the arrest of about forty monks.
