- Description of event
Phuntsok Choekyi, a 22-year-old Tibetan nun from Garu Nunnery near Lhasa, was arrested on 14 June 1993 along with ten other nuns. The group was accused of participating in a pro-independence demonstration advocating Tibetan independence. Reports indicate that the nuns were detained before they were able to carry out the protest.
Following her arrest, she was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment. She was reportedly detained with other Tibetan nuns who received prison sentences ranging from two to six years for similar political activities. Her case reflects the broader pattern of arrests and imprisonment of Tibetan nuns for peaceful political expression during the early 1990s.
