- Description of event
Penpa Dolkar (b. 1966) was a nun from Shugseb Nunnery who took part in a peaceful demonstration in Barkhor, Lhasa, on 28 August 1990. Together with five other nuns, she raised slogans in support of Tibetan independence and the Dalai Lama. Following the protest, she was immediately arrested by Public Security Bureau (PSB) officials and taken to a detention centre near Lhasa.
During her detention, Penpa Dolkar was subjected to harsh interrogation and physical abuse. Reports indicate that the nuns were repeatedly beaten, humiliated, and coerced during questioning. In 1991, she was sentenced to a term of imprisonment for her participation in the demonstration.
