- Description of event
Jampel Sangay was arrested alongside the other monks in connection with the burning of a police vehicle on 29 September 1996 in Bijingpe. Chinese authorities suspected him of maintaining direct links with individuals involved in the incident, which was treated as a serious political offense.
Unlike several of the other monks, Jampel Sangay was reportedly held in Toelung Prison rather than Drapchi Prison. He remained under investigation and interrogation by Chinese authorities due to the severity of the allegations connected to the vehicle-burning incident.
