- Description of event
Tashi Tsering (1935–1995) was a Tibetan monk from Drongtse Monastery in Yagmo Township, Ngabring County, Shigatse. A former member of the Shigatse Prefecture Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), he was arrested on 28 November 1989 at the age of 54 for allegedly writing and distributing letters and posters advocating Tibetan independence.
He was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment and detained in Drapchi Prison. During his incarceration, Tashi Tsering was reportedly subjected to severe torture and ill-treatment by prison guards and interrogation officers, which left him in critical health. Although released early in September 1993 due to his deteriorating condition, he never recovered. He died on 17 January 1995 at the age of 59, reportedly as a result of injuries sustained during his imprisonment.
