- Description of event
On 29 March 1994, Lobsang Jinpa and four fellow monks from Serwa Monastery carried out a protest against Chinese rule by removing official government nameplates and displaying posters calling for Tibetan independence and the long life of the Dalai Lama. They compelled a local government official to escort them to the County headquarters, where they continued their demonstration by chanting slogans and posting additional protest materials. The monks were subsequently arrested and subjected to public punishment. Following their trial, they received lengthy prison sentences ranging from twelve to fifteen years. Jampa Tashi and Lobsang Palden were each sentenced to twelve years’ imprisonment, while Chime Dorjee, Lobsang Jinpa, and Lobsang Tsegyal were sentenced to fifteen years. Chime Dorjee is currently serving his sentence in Drapchi Prison, while the remaining monks are incarcerated in Powo Tramo Prison.
