- Description of event
Tsering Dorjee is a former Tibetan prisoner of conscience who was arrested by Chinese authorities in 1990 for participating in pro-independence demonstrations and distributing Tibetan nationalist materials in Kardze and Lhasa. Originally from eastern Tibet, he actively protested against Chinese rule and publicly called for Tibetan independence and the return of the Dalai Lama.
In February 1990, he secretly distributed posters and raised the Tibetan national flag during a major religious gathering, prompting a large-scale security crackdown. Later that year, he was captured and detained in Seitru Prison, where he endured twelve days of severe interrogation and torture, including beatings and the use of self-tightening handcuffs that caused deep injuries. Following further interrogation in Chengdu, he was sentenced to twelve years’ imprisonment, while his associates Losang Tashi and Butrung received sentences of four and fourteen years respectively. After enduring political imprisonment and persecution, Tsering Dorjee eventually escaped into exile in India.
