- Description of event
Phuntsok Rabgay, aged 25, was a monk from Serang Chu connected to Reting Monastery. He was arrested on 22 November 1996 together with other monks accused of involvement in pro-independence political activities, including the circulation of posters opposing Chinese rule in Tibet. His arrest came during the height of the patriotic re-education campaign imposed by Chinese authorities inside the monastery.
Prior to sentencing, he was detained in Gutsa Detention Centre, where monks were reportedly subjected to repeated interrogations and political pressure. Chinese authorities accused him of participating in anti-government activities linked to the monastery protests. He was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment and was reportedly incarcerated in Drapchi Prison.
