Phuntsog Nyidron, born in 1968, was a nun from Michungri Nunnery. She led a peaceful pro-independence demonstration in 1989 and was sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment. During her detention, she was subjected to torture and harsh prison conditions.
In 1993, Phuntsog Nyidron and 13 other nuns secretly recorded songs calling for Tibetan independence while in prison. As punishment, her sentence was extended to a total of 17 years. In 1995, she was awarded the Reebok Human Rights Award in recognition of her courage, but she remained incarcerated despite international attention. She continued to endure severe conditions in prison and was expected to be released in 2006.
