- Description of event
On 29 March 1994, Lobsang Tendhar, also known as Lobsang Tsegyal, along with four monks from Serwa Monastery, protested against Chinese rule by removing government nameplates and putting up posters advocating Tibetan independence and the long life of the Dalai Lama. They compelled a local official to escort them to the County headquarters, where they continued their demonstration by shouting slogans and posting additional signs.
The monks were arrested, subjected to public punishment, and later sentenced to lengthy prison terms. Jampa Tashi and Lobsang Palden received 12-year sentences, while Chime Dorjee, Lobsang Jinpa, and Lobsang Tsegyal were sentenced to 15 years. Chime Dorjee is serving his term in Drapchi Prison, and the others are held in Powo Tramo Prison. This case highlights the severe penalties imposed on Tibetans for peaceful political protest.
