- Description of event
Rinzin Choekey (b. 1966) was a nun from Shugseb Nunnery who participated in a peaceful demonstration in Barkhor, Lhasa, on 28 August 1990. Alongside fellow nuns, she raised slogans calling for Tibetan independence and the return of the Dalai Lama. She was immediately arrested by Public Security Bureau (PSB) officials and taken to a detention centre near Lhasa.
During her detention, Rinzin Choekey was subjected to severe mistreatment, including repeated beatings, humiliation, and harsh interrogation. The authorities reportedly used physical violence while persistently questioning the detainees. In 1991, she was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment and was held in Drapchi Prison.
