- Description of event
Lobsang Tenzin, a monk from Kirti Monastery, was arrested together with a local businessman named Wotse for their involvement in the dissemination of information critical of Chinese rule in Tibet. Wotse reportedly developed strong opposition to the Chinese occupation after listening regularly to radio broadcasts and began writing critical commentaries on the Chinese government following each broadcast. In 1998, he traveled to India, where he received the Kalachakra initiations and gathered information about the Tibetan Government-in-Exile, including speeches by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
Upon his return to Ngaba County, Wotse shared the materials and information he had obtained with Tenzin, who copied and distributed them locally. As a result of these activities, both men were arrested on 23 May 1998, convicted, and sentenced to five years’ imprisonment. They are currently serving their sentences in Maowan Prison.
