- Description of event
Lobsang Tsondru was arrested at Drepung Monastery in April 1990, reportedly because of his views supporting Tibetan independence. Previously, in 1988, he had already spent six months in prison without charge for unspecified political activities.
Following his arrest in 1990, Lobsang Tsondru was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment. Reports available as of August 1991 indicate that he was still being held in solitary confinement at the end of July. There were serious fears that he continued to be subjected to torture while in detention.

According to these reports, the torture inflicted on him during the initial period of detention was extremely severe. He reportedly lost consciousness several times and suffered heavy bleeding as a result of the abuse. His physical condition was described as extremely poor. While in solitary confinement, prisoners were reportedly kept in chains and provided with severely reduced food rations, further exacerbating concerns about Lobsang Tsondru’s health and survival.
