Wangyal participated in the 10 March 1988 protest in Lhasa and witnessed the killing of his uncle’s son, Tsewang Gyurmey, and several others by security forces. After hiding for three days, he learned that his image was circulating among authorities. He fled with his wife and went into hiding in Shigatse and later around Mount Kailash to avoid arrest.
