- Description of event
Tsering Choekyi, a 14-year-old nun from Shugseb Nunnery in Toelung Dechen County, participated in a peaceful demonstration in Barkhor, Lhasa, on 12 December 1993 alongside Yeshi Tsundue and Tsultrim Tharchin. The group shouted slogans including “Tibet is independent,” “Chinese quit Tibet,” and “Long Live His Holiness the Dalai Lama.” After approximately ten minutes, they were arrested by Public Security officers in plain clothes.
She was initially detained at a local police station and later transferred to Gutsa Detention Centre, where she was interrogated for several hours and reportedly subjected to physical abuse, including slapping and the use of electric prods. Tsering Choekyi was held in Gutsa for one year under harsh prison conditions before being formally sentenced to three years of “re-education through labour” due to being a minor. She was later transferred to Trisam Detention Centre. She stated that her protest was motivated by continued Chinese repression and the denial of basic rights to Tibetans.
