- Description of event
Lobsang Jamyang (born 1960) is a driver who has been arrested on three separate occasions for his involvement in activities related to the dissemination of information about the Dalai Lama. Two of these arrests were carried out together with Gonpo.
Lobsang Jamyang was first arrested for driving from Lhasa to the Tibet–Nepal border in order to collect books and photographs of the Dalai Lama. For this activity, he was detained for three months. After his release, Lobsang and Gonpo established an organisation known as the “Dedication Association,” a name inspired by the Dalai Lama. The purpose of the association was to distribute the Dalai Lama’s speeches and related information to the Tibetan public inside Tibet.
In July 1997, Lobsang Jamyang and Gonpo were again arrested, but due to a lack of evidence they were released. Undeterred by this detention, they continued their activities, often using their own printing machines to produce and distribute materials. In August 1998, police raided Gonpo’s residence, confiscated all related materials, and arrested both men.
