- Description of event
Namdrol Wangmo, born in 1971, is a former nun from Phenpo Shar Nunnery. She took part in a peaceful protest in Lhasa on 25 May 1995, during which she shouted slogans calling for Tibetan independence. She was arrested at the scene and severely beaten by the authorities.
On 4 July 1995, Namdrol Wangmo was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment and an additional two years’ deprivation of political rights on charges of “counter-revolutionary propaganda.” She was subsequently transferred to Drapchi Prison, where she was subjected to harsh conditions and ill-treatment. Following the prison protests in 1998, she was reportedly punished with solitary confinement.
Namdrol Wangmo has suffered from serious kidney problems during her imprisonment, raising concerns about her health. Based on her sentence, she was expected to be released in 2001, though her condition while in detention remained a matter of grave concern.
