- Description of event
Lobsang Tsundue, aged 21 and from Thanko, was a monk from Reting Monastery. He was arrested on 22 November 1996 after Chinese authorities intensified investigations into nationalist activities within the monastery following the appearance of pro-independence posters and the burning of a police vehicle in September 1996.
Prior to trial, he was detained in Gutsa Detention Centre and subjected to interrogation regarding his alleged political activities. Chinese authorities accused him of participating in anti-government resistance and political organizing within the monastery. He was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment and subsequently transferred to Drapchi Prison.
