He has been sentenced to 10 years on 10 Dec,2021. Gyatso had earlier endured a four-year period of detention, beginning in 1998 during a “Patriotic Reeducation” campaign in Ngaba, for possessing a portrait of the Dalai Lama.

He was also reportedly detained for a year in 2008 during a period of widespread unrest in Tibet, although the specific reasons for that detention were not immediately clear. In 2011 he was detained in Siling (Ch: Xining) by Ngaba State Security officers and taken to a detention centre in Chengdu. Although the exact reason for his detention remains unknown, his younger brother Gō Jigmey said that the detention might be connected to the book he wanted to print in Siling.
