- Description of event
Jampa Tashi (born 1968), a monk of Serwa Monastery, was arrested on 29 March 1994 for leading a peaceful pro-independence protest in Pashoe County. Along with four fellow monks, he removed and destroyed official nameplates from the Lingkha Township People’s Government and posted slogans such as “Tibet Is an Independent Country” and “May His Holiness the Dalai Lama Live for Ten Thousand Years,” signing the posters with their names and thumbprints.
The group continued their protest toward the Pashoe County headquarters, displaying posters and shouting slogans before being taken into custody at the County Public Security Bureau. During interrogation, Jampa Tashi and the others were reportedly subjected to aerial suspension, tied by their thumbs. When questioned, all five monks collectively accepted responsibility for the protest.
Jampa Tashi was convicted by the Pashoe Intermediate People’s Court on charges of “counter-revolutionary propaganda” and sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment. He is serving his sentence in Powo Tramo Prison.
