- Description of event
Legshe Choesang (b. 1967) was a Tibetan monk associated with Nalanda Monastery and one of the companions of Sonam Dhondup and Tseten. In early 1995, he became involved in political activities alongside the group, which included supporting the distribution of booklets about Tibet and promoting the Tibetan national flag.
Soon after these materials were prepared, Legshe Choesang joined four other monks in traveling to a nearby township called Thang to distribute the booklets. While discussing their plan near a public place, their conversation was overheard by a Chinese officer, who reported them to the authorities. This led to a confrontation, followed by a physical altercation.
The next day, officials searched the house where the monks were staying. During the search, the authorities discovered the booklets and the Tibetan national flag in their possession. As a result, Legshe Choesang was arrested along with the others and taken to Gutsa Detention Centre.
Following his detention, Legshe Choesang was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for his involvement in these activities.
