- Description of event
Gyurmey, a 28-year-old Tibetan from Sog County in Nagchu Prefecture, was arrested in March 2000 in connection with alleged political activities linked to pro-Tibetan independence sentiments. he was among six Tibetans accused by Chinese authorities of supporting activities associated with the “Dalai splittist clique” and of engaging in acts deemed to endanger state security.
Gyurmey was reportedly one of the first individuals apprehended by police from Lhasa and Nagchu while he was at Sog Tsendhen Monastery during a holiday. Following his arrest, he was taken to Nagchu Detention Centre along with Yeshi Tenzin. During detention, both men were subjected to intensive beatings and torture in an attempt to force them to disclose the identities of their alleged accomplices.
After nearly nine months in detention, Gyurmey was brought before the Nagchu Intermediate People’s Court in mid-December 2000. The court presented materials such as independence posters, wooden block prints, and cassette recordings of speeches by the Dalai Lama as evidence against the detainees. Subsequently, Gyurmey was sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment for his alleged involvement in political activities considered threatening to state security.
