- Description of event
Jampel Jangchup (b. 1967), a former monk of Drepung Monastery from Toelung Dechen County, was a prominent Tibetan political activist involved in the 1987 pro-independence demonstrations and the clandestine production and distribution of pro-independence literature. He was first detained on 28 September 1987 and again on 16 April 1989. Following a mass sentencing in Lhasa on 30 November 1989, he was convicted on charges including "espionage" and organising a "counter-revolutionary group." He was sentenced to 19 years' imprisonment with five years' deprivation of political rights and transferred to Drapchi Prison on 15 January 1990. While in custody, he was reportedly subjected to severe beatings, prolonged isolation, and other forms of ill-treatment, including after participating in a prison protest in April 1991. Former inmates reported that he developed serious kidney problems and deteriorating eyesight as a result of his imprisonment.
