Dawa Tashi, a third-year student at Tibet University, was arrested in Lhasa on 16 June 2003 alongside Yeshi Gyatso and Buchung. He was accused of “splittist activities,” amid an intensified crackdown ahead of the Dalai Lama’s birthday, when public expressions of Tibetan identity were strictly prohibited. He was believed to be held at the Lhasa City Public Security Bureau Detention Centre, facing the prospect of a lengthy prison sentence.
