- Description of event
Tenzin Phuntsok was a Tibetan monk from Meldro who took part in a peaceful political demonstration in Lhasa on 20 March 1992. The protest took place near the Tsuklakhang Temple and involved around 250 participants, including monks from Gaden Monastery. Demonstrators carried Tibetan national flags and chanted pro-independence slogans.
Chinese authorities responded by forcefully suppressing the protest. Police—both in plain clothes and uniform—beat and arrested the participants, including Tenzin Phuntsok and several fellow monks.
Following his arrest, Tenzin Phuntsok was sentenced to six years of imprisonment. Other monks involved in the same protest received varying prison terms, indicating a broader crackdown on political dissent and religious figures in Tibet at the time.
