- Description of event
Yeshi Togden (born c. 1965) was a monk of Gaden Monastery in Meldro Gyama, Lhasa. He was arrested twice for participating in peaceful demonstrations in Lhasa—first on 5 March 1988 during the Great Prayer Festival, and again on 9 March 1989. On both occasions, he was detained without trial in Gutsa, Outridu, and Sitru prisons, where he endured overcrowded conditions, inadequate food, restrictions on religious practice, and frequent beatings. He also took part in prison protests over food despite the risk of punishment.
Yeshi Togden was released in 1988 following the visit of a U.S. delegation and again in 1989 after several months in detention. Under Chinese “cleansing” policies, he was permanently barred from rejoining any monastery. As a result, he left Tibet in 1990.
