- Description of event
Ngawang Jungney (born 1967), a Tibetan from Nyadrung Village in Damshung County, was arrested on 13 January 1994 while studying at Tibet University and accused of spying for the Tibetan Government-in-Exile. He was detained for six months and 26 days in Seitru Detention Centre, where he was reportedly subjected to torture before being released due to a lack of evidence. Two months later, he was re-arrested, held under strict security conditions, and subjected to further ill-treatment. He was subsequently sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment and transferred to Powo Tramo Prison. Reports indicated that he suffered severe psychological harm as a result of torture and harsh prison conditions.
