- Description of event
Ngawang Chime, a 19-year-old Tibetan Buddhist nun from Garu Nunnery near Lhasa, was among a group of nuns arrested on 14 June 1993 in connection with an alleged pro-independence demonstration. Reports indicate that the group was detained before they were able to begin the protest.
Following her arrest, Ngawang Chime was held in Drapchi Prison in Lhasa. According to available information, she was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment. Her detention formed part of a broader crackdown on Tibetan nuns and monks accused of expressing pro-independence views.
Limited information is available regarding her conditions in detention; however, reports concerning the group of nuns detained in the same incident raised concerns about harsh prison conditions and the treatment of Tibetan political prisoners during this period
